The 2023 Participatory Disaster Risk Management (PDRM) program included a group work exercise on so-called natural hazards in Bhutan (most of our students were from this country). The students brainstormed the hazards; ranked them using the Ten Seed Technique (TST); and then developed some appropriate risk reduction inititives. The seven key hazards identified were Glacial Lake Output Floods (GLOF), Landslides & Floods, Wildfires/Forest Fires, Earthquakes, Drought, Pest Outbreaks, and ‘Cold Waves’.
For the forthcoming online PDRM which commences on the 26th February 2024, interested students will be able to develop this theme further. They will look at similar natural hazards stretching across the Himalayas from Northern Pakistan to Arunachal Pradesh, and will develop risk reduction initiatives which will need to take into acccount climate change. See the link below for the online PDRM, noting Question 1 in the assessment section which relates to this issue.Download
