In the coming weeks and months a complex and sophisticated recovery program will develop.  This will be Government led, by supported by national and international stakeholders, and focus on affected individuals and communities.  It will cover the following ten  sectors:  Coordination & Logistics;  Essential Services (water, power, telecommunications); Safety & Protection; Communications; Health, Nutrition & WASH; Emergency Shelter & Non Food Items (NFI); Food Security & Livelihoods (FSL); Education; Economic & Social Recovery; and Reconstruction.

DRMC Covid-19

As part of its training, TorqAid has developed four key diagrams which help describe and explain disasters.  These are the Disaster Risk Management Cycle (DRMC), Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) diagram, Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Planning diagram, and the Project Management Cycle (PMC).

Following the Coronavirus pandemic, TorqAid has modified the DRMC to reflect some of the particular challenges of Covid-19.  A jpeg version of this modified DRMC can be accessed here.

The TorqAid Director presented a paper at the July 2021 Australian & New Zealand Disaster Management (ANZDMC) conference in the Gold Coast, Queensland.  This included putting humanitarian work into the context of the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS); providing an overview of the four key diagrams; and then applying the DRMC to both the 2019/2020 Australian bushfires, and, separately, to the current global Covid-19 pandemic.  Follow the link here for a modified version of this paper.

Bushfire CRV training

Currently Chris, working as the Baptist Union of Victoria (BUV)s Bushfire Recovery Adviser (BRA) is working with the BUV and the Baptist Unions in NSW & ACT to develop a practical training program for their bushfire-related Community Recovery Volunteers (CRVs).  These are people selected and trained up to provide ongoing informal support for bushfire-affected families from the 2019/20 Australian bushfires.  Currently, seven key area of training and orientation are being developed, these being:

  • An understanding/overview of the 2019/2020 bushfires
  • The importance of psychosocial and social restoration
  • The need for effective coordination and information sharing
  • The challenge facing people who’ve lost their homes, of living in temporary accommodation over the winter period
  • The challenge of economic restoration, particularly for primary producers and small businesses
  • The complications of effective interaction with affected folk, due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 lockdown
  • The ongoing debate on the role of climate change on bushfires, and subsequent effective future disaster risk reduction (DRR) initiatives to ensure safer communities
