Understanding Syria

TorqAid produces a regular Update on ‘Understanding the Syrian Crisis’ as part of its global humanitarian consultancy, training and research portfolio.  This has been updated for October 2020.  This includes a background to the humanitarian situation in Syria (and spilling over to adjacent countries), and also a summary of humanitarian operations. Follow the links below for this update.

The Syrian humanitarian crisis is covered as a case study in Module 4 of the online, accredited, Participatory Disaster Risk Management (PDRM) program. The current program is running from the end of July through to the beginning of November. Two more online PDRM programs are planned for 2012, these running from late February through to early June, and then from late July through to early November. Follow the link below for the PDRM brochure.

Since 2002 TorqAid has facilitated over 45 accredited Disaster Risk Management (DRM) workshops, or somewhat shorter variations of these, both across Australia and overseas.  Overseas locations have included PNG, Vanuatu, Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar, Thailand, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, South Africa, and the UK. Since 2016, workshops are now only developed for individual clients, and these are customised around the generic workshop program illustrated below. The name has now changed to ‘Participatory Disaster Risk Management (PDRM)’, and the material for this has been updated for 2020.

There are six modules in the PDRM, these focussing on Key DRM Issues and Diagrams; Case Studies – Australian Bushfires and Climate Change; Participatory Project Management (PPM); Risk Management; Complex Emergencies and Conflict-related Case Study (Rohingya); and a Final Practical Exercise.

The PDRM workshop and online program are built around the DRM diagrammatic framework, and a link to an article which summarises this is given below.

A number of key resources included in the TorqAid Toolkit are incorporated into the PDRM workshop and online program, and the link to this Toolkit is also given below.

Finally, the PDRM assignment questions have been revised for 2020. There are ten assignment question options, of which students will be required to answer three, if they are seeking university advanced standing. Details of the two universities which offer this accreditation are included in the assignment details.
